Ali directs and shoots hybrid films alongside commercial projects. She is a Michigan-raised filmmaker with nine years of experience in Copenhagen, where she co-founded the film club Empatheater. Her short b-side b-side premiered at CPH:DOX and project Slipface received support from the Danish Arts Foundation. Ali’s belief in storytelling as a tool for change is reflected in work with nonprofits such as Doctors Without Borders and Freemuse Intl.
Ali’s films explore the tension between diaristic narratives and the lingering effects of societal pressure, and focus on individuals searching for missing parts of themselves. Shot through an absurdist gaze and driven by a deep trust in partnerships, her work walks the line between fiction and memoir. This approach captures subjects at their most multi-dimensional and authentic - revealing uniquely personal and universal threads.
